In response to Grace's first question, in today's society we may not go through the foot binding process but, there are definitely extreme measures women go to to look beautiful. The first thing that comes to my mind is plastic surgery. Plastic surgeons can fix just about everything now, even height! I heard about this happening in China and they break the bones in your legs and it can take an entire year to heal. That's definitely extreme.
Responding to Grace's second question I think that if either of them had girls they would have been looked down upon. They would have been so displeased and upset with themselves.
What types of oppressive and painful things do we, as women, do today in order to look "beautiful"?
ReplyDeleteWhy do Snow Flower and Lily feel such pressure to have sons, what would have happened if one, or both, of them had had only girls?

ReplyDeleteWhy do you think men were so dominant during that time? What made them so superior to women?
